WHAT THE POLICIES SAY

Otter.ai is an AI meeting-transcription and note-taking app (desktop, iOS/Android, Chrome extension) that joins calls on Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams to record, transcribe, and summarize conversations; it is operated by Otter.ai, Inc., a privately held Delaware corporation headquartered in Mountain View, CA. Otter's own privacy policy states the service collects audio recordings, automatic OtterPilot screenshots, uploaded text/images/video, and speaker-identification data generated from recorded calls and meetings, and separately discloses using de-identified audio recordings and transcriptions (which may still contain personal information) to train its proprietary AI models. The policy also discloses routine third-party ad-tech and analytics sharing (Google Analytics, Amplitude, Facebook advertising, and disclosure categories including "Mobile advertising tracking providers" and "Advertising Partners") with a CCPA-style "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" opt-out, and Otter's own App Store privacy label self-declares that Identifiers data may be used to track users across apps and websites owned by other companies. In August 2025 a federal class action (Brewer v. Otter.ai, later consolidated in the Northern District of California) alleged Otter's Notetaker/OtterPilot recorded, accessed, and used the contents of private meetings without obtaining consent from all participants, and used those recordings to train AI models; the case was unresolved as of this research, and no live court-docket or administrator page could be fetched directly, so it is referenced here via contemporaneous legal-industry reporting on the filed complaint rather than the docket itself. No independent security audit, SOC 2 report, or regulator action was found in this research; Otter's /security URL currently resolves to a generic marketing page with no audit disclosures.

A law-firm analysis of the filed federal complaint reports that, in August 2025, Brewer v. Otter.ai alleged Otter's 'Otter Notetaker' and 'OtterPilot' services recorded, accessed, and used the contents of private conversations without obtaining proper consent from all meeting participants, and that Otter sought consent only from meeting hosts (and sometimes not even them); the suit was later consolidated with related filings in the Northern District of California and remained unresolved as of this research, with no live court-docket or administrator page available to cite directly.
