WHAT THE POLICIES SAY

Microsoft Teams is Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ: MSFT) collaboration and communication app, spanning a consumer offering and an enterprise offering bundled into Microsoft 365/Office 365. Microsoft's own privacy statement discloses that Teams collects usage data and communication metadata (time, date, and participants of communications) as part of providing its features, syncs device/Outlook contacts with consent, and shares profile information with enterprise customers when a user interacts with their school or work accounts; it also discloses that third-party device notification services receive message-preview content to deliver push notifications and are governed by their own privacy policies, not Microsoft's. Apple's App Store privacy label discloses a broad 'Data Linked to You' bucket (location, contacts, user content, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics) used for Analytics and App Functionality purposes, but does not disclose the 'Data Used to Track You' cross-app tracking bucket that Microsoft self-declares for some other Microsoft apps. Microsoft's own developer documentation lists required, non-optional diagnostic telemetry events sent by the Teams desktop client. Ownership is fully traceable through Microsoft's SEC filings as a public company. No privacy-specific regulator order, breach notice, or fine naming Microsoft Teams was found; the European Commission did accept legally binding commitments from Microsoft in September 2025 over antitrust concerns about tying Teams to Office/Microsoft 365, but that case concerns competition law (bundling), not personal-data handling, so it is noted for context rather than used as privacy track-record evidence.

TRACK RECORD

1 ENFORCEMENT ACTION
[2025-09-12]
The European Commission announced on 12 September 2025 that it accepted legally binding commitments from Microsoft to resolve an antitrust investigation into tying Microsoft Teams to the Office 365 and Microsoft 365 productivity suites, requiring Microsoft to offer Teams-free suite versions at a reduced price, allow license switching, provide interoperability with competing tools, and allow customers to export their data out of Teams; this is a competition-law (bundling) enforcement action, not a data-privacy finding, so it is reported for context rather than counted as a privacy incident.

SHARING
Microsoft's privacy statement states that when a user interacts through Teams meetings and chats with end users who are using a school or work account, Microsoft may share the user's profile information with the enterprise customer operating that school or work account; the same privacy statement separately discloses that Teams routes call/chat/message push notifications through the device's own third-party notification service, which receives content needed to display the notification (such as caller identity or the first words of a chat) and is governed by its own terms and privacy policy rather than Microsoft's, with Microsoft stating it 'is not responsible for the data collected by the company providing the notification service.'
