WHAT THE POLICIES SAY

Life360, Inc. (NASDAQ: LIF) is a publicly traded family-location-sharing app that also owns the Tile Bluetooth tracker line and Life360 Pet GPS devices. Its own Privacy Policy states it collects precise geolocation, driving-event, and movement data with consent, and separately discloses under state "sale"/"sharing" laws that it licenses precise geolocation data to business partners for their own advertising and monetization purposes; its 2025 Form 10-K confirms about 7% of total revenue comes from selling data insights derived from member data. The company's practices around location-data sale drew scrutiny after a December 2021 investigation found it supplying roughly a dozen data brokers, prompting a January 2022 announcement that it would phase out its broker deals except with Allstate's Arity and continue selling aggregated data to Placer.ai, though its current policy still discloses licensing that data for advertising. In June 2024 a hacker accessed an internal Tile tool used for law-enforcement location-data requests and stole customer data including names, addresses, emails, and phone numbers; Life360's 2025 10-K separately discloses prior "credential stuffing attacks and other security incidents," including unauthorized access to member data, which it says it determined were not material. A proposed class action filed in January 2023 in federal court in California alleges Life360 sold users' location data without permission; Life360 said in a May 2023 SEC filing that it intends to defend against the claim.

Through interviews with two former Life360 employees and two people who formerly worked at the location data brokers Cuebiq and X-Mode, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, The Markup reported in December 2021 that all four described Life360 as one of the largest sources of data for the location data industry. A former X-Mode engineer told The Markup that the raw location data X-Mode received from Life360 was among its most valuable offerings due to the sheer volume and precision of the data. Life360 CEO Chris Hulls responded that the company had "no means to confirm or deny the accuracy" of whether Life360 is among the largest sources of data for the industry.

An investigation by The Markup (Jon Keegan and Alfred Ng, December 6, 2021) reported that Life360, then used by 33 million people worldwide and marketed to parents as a way to track their children's movements, was selling data on kids' and families' whereabouts to approximately a dozen data brokers who had sold data to virtually anyone willing to buy it. The Markup identified brokers including Cuebiq and X-Mode among the recipients, and Life360 founder and CEO Chris Hulls confirmed that X-Mode buys data from Life360 and is one of "approximately one dozen data partners," adding "We see data as an important part of our business model." The characterization of these transfers as sales of kids' and families' location data is The Markup's reporting.

[2022-01-27] · SHARING
The Markup reported on January 27, 2022 that, in a quarterly activities report to its investors on the Australian Securities Exchange, Life360 founder and CEO Chris Hulls announced that Life360 would phase out all of its location data deals except with Allstate's Arity, and that the app, which The Markup described as having more than 35 million users worldwide, would still sell location data to Placer.ai but in aggregate rather than raw, precise form. The announcement was therefore a narrowing of Life360's location data sales, not a full stop: sales to Arity were to continue and aggregated sales to Placer.ai were to continue.

In January 2022, following the Markup's reporting, Life360 announced it would phase out its location data deals except with Allstate's Arity (precise location) and aggregated data sales to Placer.ai, cutting off what four former industry insiders interviewed by The Markup had described as one of the location-data industry's largest sources.

The Markup reported on June 1, 2023 (Jon Keegan) that a proposed class action was filed against Life360 on January 12, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, brought on behalf of a Florida minor and his family, alleging that Life360 sold users' location data without permission and alleging unjust enrichment, citing The Markup's December 2021 investigation. The complaint alleges the data sold could be used to identify users and their visits to sensitive locations, including places of religious worship, domestic abuse shelters and medical facilities. These are allegations in an unadjudicated complaint, not findings. Life360 disclosed the suit in its May 15, 2023 quarterly SEC filing and said it "intends to defend against the claim"; spokesperson Ed Tagliaferri told The Markup that Life360 does not comment on pending litigation and "remains committed to transparency and choice." On May 26, 2023 the judge approved an order delaying proceedings until after a private mediation session on August 21, 2023. The outcome of the case is not covered by this source.
